After working with dozens of small businesses across multiple industries, we’ve seen the same website mistakes come up again and again. The good news is that each of these mistakes is fixable — and fixing them can meaningfully impact how many clients you get from your website.
Mistake 1: No Clear Call to Action
This is the most common and most costly mistake. Visitors land on your site, they like what they see, but then… nothing tells them what to do next. They scroll through, feel vaguely positive, and leave.
Fix it: Every page needs a clear, prominent call to action. Not buried at the bottom — front and center. “Book a Free Consultation,” “Get a Quote Today,” “Call Us Now.” Make it obvious and make it easy.
Mistake 2: Writing for Yourself Instead of Your Client
Many business websites lead with the company’s story, history, and values — when what visitors really want to know is: what can you do for me?
Fix it: Lead with the client’s problem and your solution. The about page is for your story. The homepage is for your client’s journey.
Mistake 3: Too Much Text on the Homepage
Wall-to-wall text on a homepage is a conversion killer. Visitors don’t read websites — they scan them. If the page looks overwhelming at a glance, they leave.
Fix it: Use short paragraphs, bullet points, bold statements, and visuals to break up the content. Guide the eye through the page, don’t bombard it.
Mistake 4: Broken Mobile Experience
If your site isn’t optimized for mobile, you’re losing the majority of your potential visitors. Elements that look great on desktop often stack awkwardly, overlap, or become unreadable on a small screen.
Fix it: Test your site on multiple devices regularly. Better yet, build mobile-first from the start.
Mistake 5: No Social Proof
Visitors want to know that other people have trusted you and been happy with the result. Without testimonials, reviews, or a portfolio, you’re asking people to take a leap of faith.
Fix it: Add at least three client testimonials to your homepage. Link to a portfolio or case studies page. Make your existing clients your best salespeople.
Mistake 6: Slow Load Times
Every extra second your site takes to load costs you visitors and rankings. Common culprits include unoptimized images, too many plugins, and cheap hosting.
Fix it: Compress your images, minimize plugins, and invest in quality hosting. A performance audit can identify exactly what’s slowing you down.
Mistake 7: Ignoring SEO Completely
Building a beautiful website with no SEO is like opening a store in the middle of the desert — beautifully designed, but nobody can find it.
Fix it: At minimum, ensure every page has a proper title tag, meta description, and uses keywords your potential clients are actually searching for.
