You’ve done the work to get people to your website. You’re getting traffic. But the phone isn’t ringing and the contact form is quiet. What’s going on? The frustrating truth is that traffic without conversions isn’t a marketing problem — it’s a website problem. Getting people to your site is only half the job. What your site does once they arrive is where the real work happens.
Check Your Bounce Rate First
Open your Google Analytics and check the bounce rate for your homepage and key landing pages. A bounce rate above 65–70% suggests that visitors are arriving, deciding quickly that the page doesn’t meet their needs, and leaving.
This could mean your page is loading too slowly, the headline isn’t relevant to the search that brought them there, or the design feels untrustworthy. Each possibility requires a different fix.
Is Your Value Proposition Clear in 5 Seconds?
The five-second test: look at your homepage for five seconds, then look away. Can you say precisely what the business offers, who it serves, and why someone should choose it?
If the answer is no — or if it takes longer than five seconds to understand — your value proposition isn’t clear enough. Visitors who don’t immediately understand why your site is relevant to them will leave.
Are Your CTAs Visible and Compelling?
Your call to action needs to be impossible to miss and easy to act on. Check: Is there a clear CTA above the fold (visible without scrolling)? Does the CTA use specific language (“Get a Free Quote” not just “Contact Us”)? Is it visually distinct from the rest of the page? Is the form or next step simple and quick to complete?
Friction kills conversions. Every extra field in a form, every extra click in the process, reduces the number of people who complete it.
Does Your Site Work Perfectly on Mobile?
Pull out your phone and browse your own website. Be honest. Does it load quickly? Are buttons easy to tap? Does the layout look intentional or like it accidentally ended up on mobile? Can you complete the contact form without zooming in?
If the mobile experience is frustrating, you know where many of your lost conversions are going.
Is There Enough Trust Content?
Sometimes traffic converts poorly not because of design issues but because visitors don’t have enough reason to trust you yet. Do you have visible testimonials? A portfolio or work samples? Clear information about who you are and where you’re based? A professional photo?
Adding social proof elements to your key pages can directly and measurably improve your conversion rate.
